Prescott is located a mile-high in the Central Highlands of Arizona just 90 minutes north of Phoenix. As Arizona's original territorial capital, Prescott holds a wealth of history and culture preserved from its earlier territorial days. Prescott Valley, formerly known as Lonesome Valley, was part of a vast ancient mountain lake where prehistoric horses and mammoths once roamed. Ranching has been the area’s primary activity until as recent as the 1960s. In the 1960s, a fundamental change to the ranching was initiated. Urban land development began in Lonesome Valley with the subdivision platting of Lynx Lake Estates. Twenty subdivision units, totaling almost 12,000 lots on nearly 5½ square miles were recorded by 1972. Following Lynx Lake, other subdivisions, the Castle Canyon Mesa and Prescott East, were formed. The town, now known as Prescott Valley, started to develop with 1,000+ residents. On August 22, 1978, the Town of Prescott Valley was incorporated. By 1980, the Town of Prescott Valley was the 54th largest municipality in Arizona; in 1990, the 25th largest; in 2000, the 21st largest. It is currently one of Arizona’s fastest growing communities with an annual growth rate of about 8% with a current population of about 35,000 within approximately 40 square miles. Prescott, Arizona has nearly 450 miles of scenic trails for hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, or mountain biking in Prescott National Forest. The forest also contains one National Recreational Trail (Granite Mountain Trail) and one National Historic Study trail (General Crook Trail). The mild climate allows the trails to be enjoyed year-round. The Prescott National Forest is guardian of more than 100,000 acres of wilderness represented by 8 wilderness areas. Of these, Granite Mountain Wilderness is the most popular because it is only 20 minutes from Prescott by paved road. Travel is limited to foot or horseback in wilderness areas.
